Valentine's Day Haters and Other Cynics
When I was nearly 40 years old, I met the love of my life and it altered my view of Valentine's Day considerably. Suddenly I was thrust into Cupid's realm of hearts and flowers, kisses, singing birds, and more romance than I had ever known. I was so in love and so overjoyed that I wanted to shout it to the world. Valentine's Day suddenly became one of my favorite holidays and I was unreserved with my online public displays of adoration and affection for my partner, until Facebook. It wasn't until I joined Facebook in 2007 that I learned that celebrating Valentine's Day was politically incorrect, and those who didn't know this, and
who posted sentimental sayings and public displays of affection, or even general sentiments directed towards friends and family were deemed insensitive to those who didn't have anyone to love or who were loved by no one. I was surprised by the number of statuses from my "friends" expressing their disdain for the holiday as well as the cynical memes from atheist sites that explained the dubious origins of St. Valentine's Day. I began to question whether or not I truly was insensitive when I posted my enthusiastic sentiments for not only my love, but for my children and friends. So the next year when February 14th approached, I hesitated to say much about it and for several years I "overlooked" the holiday so I wouldn't be deemed a jerk by my Facebook friends.
In the seven years that I have been on Facebook, it has probably taken me five years to come to the conclusion that there are entirely too many cynics and haters out there and that every last one of them are only too happy to drag you down into the mire with them. Cynicism is a spirit killer. It rejoices in gloom and doom and points it's angry, accusing, crooked finger at anyone and everyone who would let the smallest
glimmer of hope, happiness, joy, or love, into it's myopic, narcissistic existence. I finally unfriended most of the cynics on my list and the rest, I've hidden. I love Valentine's Day, and I love having a special day on the calendar to express that love (although I don't need a special day to do so), to my friends, family, and most especially to my dearest Steph. And most of all, I love the smile on each of their faces when I tell them that I love them on Valentine's Day. Thank you, Mother, for instilling in me an appreciation for the things that matter most, most especially for the genuine expression of love on the special days that we have set aside to do just that.

Love thy neighbor
In the last several weeks I have joined the millions of other Americans working with President Obama in the effort to reform our broken health care system, and in the midst of the debate I am amazed and appalled by the lack of compassion exhibited by so many Americans for the plight of others, their friends and neighbors who lack health insurance, have insufficient health insurance, and those who don't have access to even the most basic health care because of a lack of insurance and/or the means to pay for it. How could we have allowed this to happen in this great nation? And why are so many so reluctant to do anything about it? Incredible, absolutely incredible. How can America ever be great again when it's people are so ready to let their fellow citizens perish? If this is derailed under the auspices of cost, the U.S. as a world power is toast. The U.S. dollars that so many of you are so greedily clenching to your chests will be about as good as toilet paper once the inflation from dealing with the economic effects of an unhealthy, uneducated populace really starts to set in. Human rights aren't negotiable.

The reunion
My best friend from high school, whom I have not seen in 20 years, came for a visit over the weekend. I can't even describe what a wonderful time we had. We didn't do anything but sit and talk, as we had so much to catch up. I didn't realize, until she came here this weekend, how much I have missed having her in my life. Thank goodness for places like Facebook. It brought Debi and me back together.

When old friends reunite

I found my best friend from high school on Facebook last night. We were up until well past 2:00 a.m. chatting. What a blessing it was to find her and know that she is doing well--a bit lonely after a nasty divorce and the deaths of both her father and a step-dad with whom she was close. We gave one another many virtual hugs and kisses and vowed that we would stay in close contact. It's been over twenty years since we last spoke, and I've missed her. There have been so many things happen in both of our lives since then that there just wasn't enough time to share it all in one sitting. We have a lot of catching up to do.

Computing with my best friend

Since Steph got her new Toshiba Satellite laptop computer yesterday, she gave me her old Dell Inspiron and we've been sitting in bed all day together with our computers--she setting hers up and me writing my book, (which is now on my laptop so that I can take it to work with me and write while I'm on my lunch hour!), and dinking around on our blogs. We're having such a great time!
What a couple of sillies!

Blog friends

Don't ever let people tell you that you don't form real friendships on line. Some of the best friends I have are people I have met on line, including the love of my life and my life partner.
The following award was given to me by my new blog friend at Finding My Wings in Life. She's a very special young woman whom I am enjoying getting to know very much. Thank you for this. It's my very first award for this blog! :)

The women in my life
When I was little, | |
One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man.
One friend will meet your spiritual need,
But whatever their assignment in your life,
It may all be wrapped up in one woman, But for many, it's wrapped up in several..
